This degree can also open doors to new employment opportunities: A 2022 GMAC survey found that 92 percent of corporate recruiters expected to hire new MBAs during the year.

Programs such as the Online MBA at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, offer convenience and flexibility for professionals seeking to bolster their knowledge and expertise without pausing their careers. This article reviews the typical MBA eligibility criteria and application process, and offers tips on how to assemble a compelling application that can increase your chances of being admitted to your desired program.

Traditional MBA Eligibility Criteria

Most MBA programs require applicants to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum undergraduate GPA of around 3.0. And many prefer applicants with relevant professional business experience, ranging from two to five years. This work experience generally provides MBA students with the necessary context to understand program content. It also enables them to contribute more effectively to class discussions and projects. That said, some programs welcome students directly from undergraduate study, while others offer combined bachelor’s and MBA degree tracks.

To be eligible to apply to the Online MBA program at Haslam College of Business at UTK, at a minimum, a candidate must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a GPA of at least 2.7 out of a possible 4.0, or a 3.0 during the senior year of undergraduate study (note, the actual average required for admission may be higher, depending on the number and qualification of applicants). Applicants with previous graduate work must have a grade point average of 3.0.

While many of UTK’s Online MBA students hold undergraduate business degrees, no specific academic background beyond a bachelor’s degree is required to apply. GMAT or GRE test scores are not required. Instead, the UTK admissions team focuses on admitting applicants with professional work experience and proven quantitative skills. In general, the UTK Online MBA program is a good fit for candidates who are on a leadership trajectory or want to acquire valuable business skills to boost their marketability.

How to Craft a Competitive MBA Application

MBA applications vary from program to program, but many require most (if not all) of the components below. Below are some suggestions on how to optimize your chances of admission.

Write a Strong Personal Statement or Essay

Your personal statement provides your best opportunity to communicate directly with the admissions committee. It should be clear, concise, and focused, conveying your aspirations and enthusiasm for the program. It should present the reasons you are pursuing an MBA at this point in your life and career and identify how the program you are applying to aligns with your intended career goals. The personal statement is also an opportunity to address any potential weaknesses in your application and explain how they will not prevent you from succeeding in their MBA program.

MBA programs seek students who can contribute insights from their work experiences in the classroom. Use your personal statement to spotlight your professional experience, unique skills, and leadership qualities. Carefully edit and proofread your personal statement for spelling, grammar, and clarity. If possible, ask a trusted friend or colleague to review it as well.

The UTK Online MBA application does not ask for a personal statement but does include a series of short essays in response to prompts. These essays serve the purpose of a personal statement.

Organize Your Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Organize your resume or CV to showcase your relevant business and leadership experience, Also, be sure to list any pertinent academic or professional achievements. As with your personal statement, proofread your resume or CV carefully and ask someone else to review it as well. The UTK Online MBA program application requires that candidates submit a professional resume or CV.

Request Letters of Recommendation

Most MBA programs require two to three letters of recommendation, usually from someone who manages you directly or a professor familiar with your academic achievement. When seeking recommendations, approach recommenders who can provide specific, detailed insight into your abilities, work ethic, and character. Provide them with context on your professional accomplishments and MBA goals so the reference relates to what you discuss in your personal statement. The Online MBA program at UTK requires two letters of recommendation.

Provide GMAT or GRE Test Scores

Some MBA programs require GMAT or GRE test scores as part of their application. Others offer waivers for work experience or other qualifications. As a general rule, the more professional experience you have, the less important standardized test scores are in the admissions process. Most business schools consider managerial success a more accurate predictor than test scores of your ability to succeed in their MBA program. As previously noted, UTK’s Online MBA program does not ask for GMAT or GRE test scores.

Meet With an Enrollment Advisor

An  enrollment advisor can help guide you through the MBA application and enrollment process. In addition to confirming your eligibility to apply and checking you are submitting all the required application materials, enrollment advisors can provide you with information about financial aid and scholarships — and share what their program’s admissions team is seeking in their MBA candidates. They can also answer questions on how best to shape your application to highlight your strengths and address any potential weaknesses.
